R. B. Holmes Archive

R. B. Holmes was a photographer, surveyor, author and artist whose work documented life across India during the early twentieth century. Randolph built-on the empire of his father, W. D. Holmes, who did similar work in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Through photography and visual documentation, Holmes created an extraordinary historical record of places, people, architecture, and daily life during a period of immense cultural and political change. Parts of this material are now preserved across family collections and institutional archives, including holdings connected to Duke University.

Holmes Frontier is gradually restoring and presenting these collections through photography, archival material, and historical research connected to his life and work.
