When Eve was first in Paradise
She thought it very nice
The serpent, subtle and so wise,
Said ‘Lady, what’s to criticise!’

Eve thought a while and then said ‘Please.
I think there’s far too many trees
We’re not allowed to cut down one
So tell me just what can be done?’

The serpent arched his gorgeous head,
‘Can’t cut one, I think you said
A loophole means you can cut two
And that is what you ought to do.

Here have an apple while we plan
Just how to deceive that Landlord man.
A wee cut here—not very big
Not much larger than a twig

A cut on the side that can’t be seen
Another behind the leaves so green.
Cut and hack
It won’t grow back.

When it’s discovered (far too late)
You will be shown the Exit gate
But—you did it!
Deceitfully.’
